Originally produced for the U.S. Military and NASA, freeze dried foods has several advantages over frozen or dehydrated food. Frozen foods retain flavor and nutritional value, but require low temperature storage conditions. Dehydrated/canned foods are shelf-stable, but lose flavor, texture and nutritional content. Freeze-drying is the best of both worlds, preserving freshness, color, and aroma, while being completely shelf-stable.

More about freeze drying

If a freeze-dried substance is sealed to prevent the reabsorption of moisture, the substance may be stored at room temperature without refrigeration, and be protected against spoilage for many years. Preservation is possible because the greatly reduced water content inhibits the action of microorganisms and enzymes that would normally spoil or degrade the substance.

Freeze-drying also causes less damage to the substance than other dehydration methods using higher temperatures. Freeze-drying does not usually cause shrinkage or toughening of the material being dried. In addition, flavors, smells and nutritional content generally remain unchanged, making the process popular for preserving food.

Freeze dried food storages can be rehydrated (reconstituted) much more quickly and easily because the process leaves microscopic pores. The pores are created by the ice crystals that sublimate, leaving gaps or pores in their place.

No rotation needed

When organizing food, water, or other emergency preparedness packages, most people struggle with replacing items when they expire. All too often, expensive food must be thrown away simply because of its short shelf life. Food Insurance eliminates this problem by providing food and water solutions that last so long they don’t require constant rotation.

The Food Insurance Essentials and Emergency Plus food pouches each have a 7-10 year shelf life. Food Insurance monthly packages, which utilize #10 cans, are guaranteed for 25+ years! That’s 25 years without the stress of wondering if your family is prepared.

Food Insurance recommends that all food products be stored in a cool, dry area to maximize shelf life and product freshness.

Maximize your space

Traditional food storage containers are often awkward and come in different shapes and sizes. This makes it difficult to discreetly store or even find a place in your home for emergency food. Food Insurance products have a compact design that allows you to store more in less space.

For your convenience

The Food Insurance Essentials and Emergency Plus packages come in a convenient backpack that can be easily stored in a closet or under a bed, while ready to go on short notice. Food Insurance monthly packages are shipped in stackable boxes—in fact, an entire year of food for one person can easily fit underneath a queen bed.

It’s fun and easy to prepare

Preparing a meal with traditional food storage ingredients like wheat and beans can be nearly impossible during an emergency when all utilities may not be available. Food Insurance meals are easy and fun to prepare—just add water.

Taste the quality

Quite simply, Food Insurance products are delicious! Few people enjoy eating the same thing day after day. Your emergency food solution should offer a variety of great-tasting foods that taste and look as fresh as homemade meals.

Many competitors say they provide high calorie meals, but on further inspection, these “meals” are just bland tasting energy bars. If you or your kids won’t eat it, then what good is having it?

Also, some people believe that storing buckets of wheat and beans makes them prepared to live through an emergency. However, most people today don’t know how to grind wheat, let alone do anything with raw flour. Food Insurance meals come ready to eat. All you have to do is add water.

That’s why survival supplies are so important. In light of the tragic events in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, the power outage in New York City that brought the city to a standstill, and the constant threat of fires, earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural disasters across the country, it is important to make sure we always have the basic necessities of life with enough survival supplies for your family to survive for at least two weeks.

Its been three years since The Big blackout, and I was NOT prepared. Bank machines down we had no way to add to what little we had and we were not alone. We emptied our freezer and had a big barbque inviting most of our neighbors kids for a meal of hamburgers and and what ever else was defrosting. For a few days we were equal, equally without. No batteries,no bottled water,no news,no fresh food, no power. I swore we would be better prepared next time. Did you find your self in the same boat or did you think ahead and have a few more comforts? How would you do it differently? This question is concerns any disaster not just blackouts. The connection Emergency preparedness
Thanks for the answers so far but I need serious answers if you would be so kind.
I have lots of towels iansand9876
I am towel prepared. I guess I can burn them when the barbque is empty, and wipe the fear based sweat off my brow. I read War of the worlds tinfoilwindexwater I will keep that in mind. Only gangsters can have guns in our country and I am not a card carrying member glock509.

Thanks
This is a tiebreaker I can’t pick so i will put to a vote. It is between jporrero78 and mury902 who will be doing pretty good next emergency,at least you have some important items. I just wanted to get people thinking and get ideas, thanks much! ~A~
